Bioweek 2024!
Bioweek 2024!

Bioweek 2024, organized by EMBS UTEC and supported by IEEE UTEC and the Bioengineering Research Center, was held from Monday 9 September to Friday 13 September. The event was attended by a number of organizations and prominent guests, offering a week full of presentations, workshops and activities focused on bioengineering and biotechnology. This year, we reached almost 300 entries, doubling the participation of the previous edition.

On Monday, September 9, the inauguration was held in the auditorium with the presentation of Dr. Julio Valdivia, Director of the Bioengineering department. The day continued with a musical presentation of Preludio Sinfónico, who performed “Amanecer Andino” and “City of Stars”. Dr. César Beltrán, President of IEEE Peru, and Dr. Fanny Casado, President of IEEE EMBS Peru, then shared a few words. After a brief recess, the Msc. Luz Perez presented on in vitro models for the study of angiogenesis. The day concluded with two workshops:
“Microfluidic Development for Medicine” by Richard Calderón and “Films and their Applications in Biotechnology” by Alejandro Iza.

On Tuesday, September 10, it began with a workshop on how to publish a scientific paper from the undergraduate level, taught by Dr. Michelle Chirinos, CEO of IGBM. The workshops on Bioplastics and Biofilms by SBE UTEC, and the modelling of bioreactors by Giussepi Mamani of AiCHE UTEC continued. The day ended with a talk about GaMA VR by Oscar Gonzales of ASME UTEC, who spoke about innovation in motor assessments.

On Wednesday, September 11, the Women in Science Conversation was held with the participation of Dr. Ruth Manzanares, TOP 3 Peruvian women inventors; Dr. Myra Flores, head of Concytec; and Dr. Ruth Canahuire, dean of the Engineering department at UTEC. During the afternoon, hybrid talks were held on various bioengineering projects, including presentations by Ariana Ponce on quantum dots and hydrogel synthesis, Carlos Lazzarino on informatics in public health, Nathaly Dongo on the classification of physical activities with a smartwatch, and Diego Dueñas on the IRMA Project.

Thursday, 12 September was dedicated to the presentations of partners in biomedicine and biotechnology. The day began with a presentation on the design of an Alzheimer’s biosensor by Isabel Agreda from EMBS UPC. Workshops on structural biology were held by Biómicas UPC and applications of Tinyml in health by Moises Meza Rodriguez of EMBS-UNMSM. The day ended with a talk on AI Baymax Record, a record of clinical histories with neural networks, by Lady Toribio, Jaenpool Albuquerque and Leonardo Palacios from EMBS UNAC.

As the last day of the event, on Friday 13 September, it started with a neuroengineering workshop on linear models and machine learning in fMRI by Carlos Mugruza from NeuroUtec.
The week culminated in a fair of projects and organisations, followed by a closing ceremony.

Bioweek 2024 was a success, promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of bioengineering and strengthening the academic and professional community of both UTEC students and other universities such as UPC, UTP, UNAC, UNMSM. We have the participation and support of the Barbara McClintock Genetics Institute (IGBM), NeuroUtec, Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) UTEC, Preludio Sinfónico, Dance UTEC, ASME UTEC, AiCHE UTEC, WIE UTEC, Biómicas, and the EMBS of the UNI, UPC, UNAC and UNMSM.
